Guide to Buying the Right Accounting Software

It can be quite intimidating when thinking about buying the right accounting software. There are many companies offering accounting software packages and each comes with a variety of options. There are specific software packages available for vertical markets such as manufacturing, insurance, day care and more. But if your company does not fall within their specific categories you may not get what you really need.

So, in order to buy the right accounting software for your needs, it's important to identify what your specific needs are first.

1. Make a list. What features are "must-haves" in your business. That will help you to narrow down your search.

2. Ignore marketing hype in the media. Professional marketers are paid to make products look good. You can review feature lists, but ignore all of the "best software on the market" type commentary.

3. Carefully examine features in each software package.

4. Remove software from the list that is not in your budget range. Chances are you'll find what you need in your price range so no need to stress about spending too much.

5. Eliminate software that doesn't meet your basic needs or have key features.

6. Once you have found the accounting software that meets all of your needs, compare it with others in the same price range to see if you can get additional features.

7. Read customer reviews on forums or bulletin boards (not the company website). Make sure the company has a good reputation, offers customer support and has a quality product.

8. Analyze the price you'll pay if your software is cheap but does not do what you need it to do. You may consider buying a more expensive accounting software package that has a good reputation.

9. Determine ease-of-use. If you are going to be using the software yourself and don't have time to learn thousands of features, make sure the software is easy to use and friendly to the novice user.

10. Once you make your purchase, spend time getting to know the software and available features. Most accounting software will come with tutorials of some kind. If you know what you can do, and spend some time initially learning how to run the software, you'll save hours of time later when you're up against deadlines.
